Sugar Loaf Mountain Island National Recreation Trail
Actually two trails of different difficulty, the Sugar Loaf Mountain National Nature Trail was developed by the Corps of Engineers in 1971 after the lake had filled and the peak of Sugar Loaf Mountain rose 540 feet above the water. The trail can be accessed only by water and a courtesy dock is available on the southeast side of the mountain.
This is a beautiful, unspoiled nature hike for all four seasons. Photo opportunities abound and there are numerous rest stops along the trail to allow visitors to set their own pace. The Terrace Trail is of Moderate difficulty with moderate slopes. It circles the base of the mountain top. It is 1.6 miles round trip from the boat dock. Mule Trail is a Difficult trail that leads to the mountain top. Mule Trail has very steep steps, steep stairs, high bluffs, and difficult walking conditions. It is 0.5 miles in length. The mountain has no restroom facilities.
